I’ve written before about the best place to catch the sunrise on the Isle of Skye but I realised that I haven’t actually given you a heads up on the best sunset spot on the Isle of Skye.
So, I’ll let you into a little secret. Actually, it’s not so much a secret as a very popular tourist attraction. And if you’re planning a trip to the Isle of Skye, you’ve probably already heard of it and may even have seen pictures. But what you may not know is that it’s absolutely the best places to see the sunset on the rugged Scottish isle.
Cue dramatic coastline, epic cliff faces and a famous lighthouse and you have the picture perfect, highly photographed Neist Point.
Located on the most westerly tip of the Isle of Skye near the town of Glendale, Neist Point enjoys spectacular sunsets with a scenic backdrop to match. While you can visit the lighthouse here, we came to Neist Point purely for the sunset, so didn’t get to explore the lighthouse on this occasion.
We visited the Isle of Skye with a group of friends, one of which pointed out that Neist Point was supposed to be the best sunset spot on the Isle of Skye. And with two avid photographers in our group, it wasn’t long before the decision was made to visit Neist Point during our trip.
Scotland is known for its unpredictable weather patterns, but we were extremely fortunate during our trip to have some excellent dry weather and some sunny spells. The day we decided to head to Neist Point, however, thick clouds rolled in and our hopes of catching a beautiful sunset were dashed.
Alas, we decided to head out anyway in case the clouds cleared.
We arrived at Neist Point late in the day about an hour before the sun was due to set. The area was relatively busy with a few people milling around, clearly hoping for a lovely sunset too, but it wasn’t crazy busy so we were able to enjoy the scenery and really soak it in.
Unfortunately, it was incredibly windy almost to the point of being unbearable and we sought shelter in a concrete lookout a little way along the cliff.
Desperately bidding the clouds to shift, we stuck it out until it seemed all hope was lost. Being pretty cold and wind-shaken, us girls called it a day and started to head back to the car, disappointed that we wouldn’t witness an epic sunset that evening.
We were almost at the car when, by chance, I turned around and was taken aback by a stunning sunset peaking through a gap in the heavy clouds. We had almost completely missed it!
Racing back to the cliff edge and whipping our cameras out, we enjoyed one of the most epic sunsets I’ve ever seen. Suddenly it didn’t matter that it was blowing a gale.
Although the clouds didn’t clear completely, it was the dramatic cloud formations which gave this sunset an edge. I’m so delighted we decided to stick around.
If you’re a sunset chaser like me, I really can’t recommend this place enough. It really is the best sunset spot on the Isle of Skye. I hope you enjoy our photos and get to see a sunset from Neist Point yourself.
Ah what a beautiful place! Photos stunning as usual! 😀
