Have you spotted a cheap deal to Corfu in October but aren’t sure whether it’s worth booking? With summer coming to an end, October can be a bit of a gamble when it comes to the weather, and with some restaurants, beach bars and tourist attractions closing for the season, you might be wondering whether there will be enough to see and do.

But if you’re not too bothered about guaranteed sunshine and prefer exploring without the summer crowds, October can actually be a lovely time to visit Corfu.

The beaches are much quieter, temperatures are generally more comfortable for hiking and sightseeing, and you can enjoy a more relaxed side of this beautiful Greek island.

I’ve visited Corfu nine times, including twice in October, and it’s easily one of my favourite places in the world. I’ve explored the island at different times of year, from the height of summer through to the quieter autumn months, and have experienced firsthand just how different Corfu can be outside the main tourist season.

So, is Corfu worth visiting in October? Read on to find out what you can realistically expect from the weather, the best areas to stay, what’s still open, and the best things to do in October, along with my honest advice on whether it’s the right time of year for your trip.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Corfu?

October can be a great time to visit Corfu. But there are risks that come from travelling to Corfu in October. I’ve been to Corfu nine times, twice in October, and have loved the island all year round.

However, October weather can be extremely changeable, and sunshine is not guaranteed. The first time I visited Corfu in October, it rained for 6 days straight. The second time I went to Corfu in October, it was sunny for the first 3 days and then rained for the last 3.

On the other hand, I know people who have been to Corfu in October and had wall-to-wall sunshine, so although the weather can be great at the end of the summer season, there is just a much higher risk that it won’t be.

It also depends massively on whether you’re visiting Corfu in early or late October, as the chance for bad weather increases significantly as you get closer to November.

The other thing to consider is that many shops, restaurants and bars start to close in October for the winter season, so your choices for places to eat in Corfu can be a little more limited.

Having said that, if you struggle with the heat, summer crowds, or want to enjoy some hiking trails, October can be a great time to visit, with cooler temperatures, the chance for some cloudy days, and far fewer tourists.

So, I’d say if you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine and beach days, Corfu in October may not be the best choice, but if you know your trip won’t be ruined by a cloudy or rainy day, it could be a great time of year to visit this gorgeous Greek island.

What Is the Weather Like in Corfu in October?

Although Corfu enjoys pleasantly warm temperatures in October, it does start to cool down, and the weather can be unpredictable, with sunny days mixed with rain and cooler evenings.

This can make for a great opportunity to get out walking, or just to explore the island without the searing temperatures of mid-summer.

With that in mind, it’s worth packing for a mixture of conditions, particularly if you’re visiting towards the end of the month.

Does It Rain a Lot in Corfu in October?

Corfu has, on average, 9 to 11 rainy days in October, compared to 1-3 days in August. While rain is not guaranteed for your October trip, there is a greater chance of having some wet days.

Can You Swim in the Sea in October?

The sea is generally still warm in October, having been warmed up all summer. The average sea temperature is 22–23°C, which makes for pleasant sea swimming, even on cloudy or cooler days.

Is Corfu Busy in October?

Corfu tends to be much quieter in October than the busier summer months. I’ve been to Corfu throughout the summer, between June and September, and it seems to be getting busier every year as people discover this gorgeous Greek island, but October still tends to feel like ‘off season’.

Because it’s quieter, you can take advantage of much cheaper deals (flights, accommodation and car hire all tend to be much cheaper in October). You’ll also be able to enjoy quieter beaches and restaurants, without the hordes of day trippers from cruise ships descending.

Is Everything Still Open in Corfu in October?

Travelling to Corfu in October is a trade-off. While you’ll enjoy quieter beaches and cheaper prices, you’ll also notice that some hotels, restaurants and attractions start to close up for the winter.

Restaurants, bars and shops in Corfu Town, the island’s capital, mainly stay open, but many beach bars and coastal restaurants start to wind down for their winter break after working 7 days a week over the summer. This is especially noticeable towards the end of October.

Boat trips are less frequent in October too, and it may be more difficult to rent boats for the day, as the unpredictable weather can cause rougher sea conditions.

This doesn’t necessarily need to be a dealbreaker, but it’s definitely something to be aware of, especially if you’ve got specific restaurants, beach bars and attractions you’d like to visit.

Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Corfu in October?

My personal favourite place to stay on Corfu is Paleokastritsa, because it is genuinely known as the most beautiful place on the island. Paleokastritsa is located on the west coast of Corfu, only a 40-minute drive from Corfu Town.

The coastline around Paleokastritsa is stunning, and there’s so much to do in Paleokastritsa itself that you could be busy for a whole week and not leave the area.

There are plenty of bars, restaurants, tavernas and shops in Paleokastritsa, which means that even if a few start to close for the season in October, you’ll still have plenty to choose from.

Alternatively, if you want to be closer to Corfu Town, there are coastal towns on the east coast such as Ipsos, Dassia and Gouvia. Or if you’re not too bothered about being close to the best beaches in Corfu, you could choose to stay in Corfu Town itself and enjoy the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town right on your doorstep!

Some of my personal recommendations for the best places to stay in Paleokastritsa are:

Budget
Arianna Apartments – I’ve stayed here three times. The apartments are basic, but the pool is lovely and the apartments have views of the ocean or the mountains. The location is also fab, as you are very close to Paleokastritsa’s main beach.

Mid-Range
Hotel Apollon – Lovely hotel right on the main beach in Paleokastritsa. The hotel has a restaurant and serves great food and is just steps away from the beach!

Luxury
Akrotiri Beach Resort & Spa – 5-star resort and spa overlooking Agia Triada Beach in Paleokastritsa. The hotel has a pool, beach bar and sun terrace bar with panoramic views of the scenic Alipa Marina.

View over Paleokastritsa's main beach from the road leading up to the Monstery. It's a clear sunny day and the beach is quiet and not too busy.

Best Things to Do in Corfu in October

There are so many things to do in Corfu all year round, but in October, with the slightly more unpredictable weather, it’s good to have a few ideas of what to do in Corfu on a rainy or cloudy day.

Explore Corfu Old Town

No matter what time of year you visit Corfu, a trip to Corfu Town is a must. It’s one of my favourite places on the island – think incredible historic Venetian-style architecture, colourful shuttered buildings with ornate balconies, great tavernas and restaurants, and a maze of old town streets you can get lost in for hours.

Whether it’s a gorgeous sunny day or it’s pouring with rain, Corfu Town is a great choice for a day trip on Corfu.

Some of my favourite spots in Corfu Town include:

  • Skalinada Restaurant – a quaint restaurant tucked into the Old Town streets, serving great food in a lovely setting
  • Old Fortress – a historic fortress with great views near the harbour.
  • Corfu Museum of Asian Art – a stunning building, great for taking photos
  • The Liston – a beautiful cafe-lined promenade on the edge of the Old Town, beside the Spianada Ground

Travel tip: If you’re visiting Corfu Town for the first time, I highly recommend booking this guided small-group walking tour to get familiar with the streets and learn about the history and local culture.

A beautiful promenade in Corfu Town on a bright sunny day. Corfu Town is a great place to visit if the weather is bad in Corfu in October.

Go Hiking and Explore Corfu’s Countryside

Cooler temperatures provide the perfect opportunity to get out on foot and explore some of the island’s hiking trails.

If you’re ambitious, you could tackle the 200 km Corfu Trail, which spans from Kavos in the south and finishes at Agia Ekaterini Headland, Corfu’s northernmost point. It’s not recommended to do this hike in the summer months because of the heat, so October would be the perfect time of year to tackle this long-distance hiking trail.

If you’re staying in Paleokastritsa, you could walk the Donkey Path to Lakones, the village perched on the mountainside above Paleokastritsa. It’s a steep climb, but only takes around 1 hour to complete one-way.

Or you can extend that hike by walking from Lakones all the way to Angelokastro, a Byzantine castle overlooking Paleokastritsa and the Ionian Sea.

View over Porto Timoni Beach from the viewpoint hike. Hiking is a great way to explore the island of Corfu in autumn's cooler temperatures.

Visit Corfu’s Beautiful Beaches Without the Crowds

So many people flock to Corfu for its beautiful beaches, but it can be hard to enjoy them when they are packed full of people in July and August. Corfu tends to be much quieter in October, which means you’ll have more space to enjoy the coastline and beaches that Corfu is famous for.

This is also the case for some of the spots on Corfu that have been made Instagram-famous, like La Grotta Beach Bar. When I last visited in September, it was packed! But visiting in October gives a totally different, and much more relaxing, vibe.

Explore Traditional Villages and Enjoy Local Food

The vast majority of tourists who visit Corfu stick to the resorts and beach towns on the coast, completely missing the traditional villages a little further inland.

One of my absolute favourite things to do in Corfu is drive around the island visiting traditional villages, stopping at local family-run tavernas for incredible local food and homemade wine, and wandering around the pretty streets.

My favourite village on the island is Doukades, which is only a short drive from Paleokastritsa. Doukades has become a lot busier since I first stumbled upon it 14 years ago, so October is a great time of year to visit to avoid the crowds and experience a much more local vibe.

Take a Road Trip Around the Island

While October may not always be the best month for sunbathing and snorkelling, it is a great time of year to explore the island by car. Car hire is extremely cheap in October (last time, I paid £13 for a rental car for 6 days!) and it’s actually the easiest way to get around, as public transport networks aren’t extensive.

I highly recommend taking a road trip from Paleokastritsa to Lakones to admire the view, and then driving onwards to Angelokastro, Agios Georgios Beach and onwards to Peroulades where you’ll find Loggas Beach (also known as Sunset Beach).

Another great road trip option is to drive to Pelekas to climb to Kaiser’s Throne (the Observatory of Kaiser Wilhelm II) for incredible views across the island.

Zara stands at a balcony viewpoint in Lakones, one of the best places to visit for incredibe views of Corfu in October.

Visit Wineries and Olive Oil Mills

Corfu is known for its locally-produced olive oils and delicious wines found on taverna tables across the island. And October provides the perfect opportunity to explore local vineyards, olive oil mills, and farms.

Visit Dr. Kavvadia Farm to learn about olive oil production and sustainable farming, then taste award-winning olive oils with fresh vegetables from the farm’s garden. Or head to Goulis Winery and combine a wine-tasting with sampling local olive oil and honey, surrounded by ancient vines and olive trees.

What to Pack for Corfu in October

Packing for Corfu in October can be a little trickier than during the summer months because the weather is less predictable. You could be enjoying warm sunshine on the beach one day and exploring Corfu Old Town in the rain the next, so I recommend packing a mixture of lightweight summer clothing and a few warmer layers, along with a waterproof jacket.

You certainly don’t need a winter wardrobe and warm coats, but it’s worth being prepared for cooler evenings and the occasional rainy day, particularly if you’re visiting towards the end of October.

FAQs About Visiting Corfu in October

Is Corfu Hot Enough for Sunbathing in October?

Corfu can provide perfect sunbathing weather in October with average temperatures of 18-19°C and average daytime highs of 23°C. However, evenings can be cooler, so you should pack lightweight layers and a jacket.

  • People swim in the blue water at La Grotta Beach Bar in Paleokastritsa Corfu. It's busy with tourists, enjoying the sunshine and views.
  • People swim in the blue water at La Grotta Beach Bar in Paleokastritsa Corfu, while others sit on a wooden pontoon under a shaded umbrella.

Can You Still Go on a Beach Holiday in Corfu in October?

Yes! In fact, beaches are much quieter in October, providing the perfect opportunity to relax without hordes of tourists vying for space. However, Corfu can experience some rainier or cloudier days in October, so if it’s wall-to-wall sunshine and long beach days you’re after, it might be best to choose an alternative destination.

Is Corfu Cheaper in October?

Flights to Corfu and accommodation tend to be much cheaper in October as the season winds down and fewer tourists visit. If you’re looking for a cheap holiday, visiting Corfu in October could be perfect if you don’t mind risking potentially unpredictable weather.

The Museum of Asian Art in Corfu Town. This is a great place to visit on a rainy day if you're visiting Corfu in the shoulder season.

Do You Need a Hire Car in Corfu in October?

I always recommend hiring a car when you visit Corfu, whether you visit in the summer months or in the shoulder seasons. It’s much easier to explore the island and reach rural villages when you have your own transport, although you can catch buses between major resorts and towns if needed.

I recommend booking a rental car with Discover Cars as I generally tend to find they offer the lowest prices, and you can easily check rental prices across multiple companies.

If you don’t plan to leave your resort, you can book an airport transfer and avoid the costs of a hire car.

My Verdict: Is Corfu Worth Visiting in October?

It really depends on what you are looking to get from a holiday. If you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine, beach days and vibrant nightlife, Corfu in October isn’t for you! I personally wouldn’t risk going to Corfu in October if I wanted beach days and sunshine.

But if you’re looking for cooler temperatures, quieter beaches and resorts, and a relaxed island holiday, I think you’ll love Corfu in October. If you’re particularly looking for unusual hiking destinations, Corfu in October is perfect!
